House Mooton

Wisdom and Strength

House Mooton of Maidenpool is one of the older noble lines of the riverlands, its roots stretching back to the age of the First Men when the Mootons ruled as petty kings over the Bay of Crabs. They survived the coming of the Storm Kings, who under Monfryd the Mighty briefly conquered Maidenpool, and they endured the Andal Invasion as well, though at great cost. King Florian the Brave, last of the Mooton petty kings, fell fighting the Andals who swept down upon his seat. His heirs bent the knee and took up the new faith, holding Maidenpool thereafter as lords rather than kings.

During Aegon's Conquest, the lord of Maidenpool stood beside Lord Darklyn of Duskendale in open defiance of Aegon the Conqueror. Both lords perished before dragon-fire and the swords of Orys Baratheon. The slain lord's brother Jon Mooton then yielded, and Aegon granted him back his seat. The house recovered its wealth through Maidenpool's position as one of the chief ports of the Bay of Crabs, and by the time of the Dance of the Dragons the Mootons counted themselves richer than many of their overlords at Riverrun. Lord Walys Mooton rode for the blacks in that war, retaking Rook's Rest before falling in a reckless assault on King Aegon II's dragon Sunfyre.

At the outbreak of the War of the Five Kings, Maidenpool is held by Lord William Mooton, a cautious and fleshy man who declares for King Robb Stark but keeps largely to his walls rather than committing his strength in the field. When Lord Randyll Tarly marches on Maidenpool and takes the town, William is confined to a tower cell until King Tommen's pardon releases him. He secures his house's future by betrothing his eldest daughter Eleanor to Dickon Tarly, Randyll's heir.
