House Darry

House Darry of Castle Darry is an ancient noble house of the riverlands, sworn to House Tully of Riverrun. Their seat, Castle Darry, sits astride one of the few crossings of the river road and has long commanded the approach to the ruby ford. The house traces its roots to the age of the Andal invasion, when three sons of a Lord Darry gave their lives holding the Widow's Ford against the host of Vorian Vypren. Though they could not turn the tide, the Darrys endured, and for thousands of years they served loyally under whichever power held the Trident, whether Mudd, Justman, or Hoare. After Aegon's Conquest they passed into the service of House Tully and thence to the Iron Throne.

No house in the riverlands kept longer faith with the Targaryens. The Darrys backed Princess Rhaenyra during the Dance of the Dragons and paid for it in blood and fire; Prince Aemond's dragon Vhagar burned the castle and the fields around it, killing the lord and his heir upon the battlements. They rose again, rebuilt, and stood for House Targaryen once more during the Blackfyre Rebellion, riding for Daeron II against Daemon's black dragons. When Robert's Rebellion swept away the dynasty they had served across the centuries, the cost was ruinous: the crown stripped half their lands and most of their wealth. By the time of A Game of Thrones, Ser Raymun Darry holds what remains of the house's diminished estate, a proud but battered name bearing the black plowman above the keep called the Plowman's Keep.
