Lord Footly was head of House Footly and Lord of Tumbleton during the Dance of the Dragons, holding his market town on the headwaters of the Mander for Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen and the blacks. Tumbleton was the last black stronghold between King's Landing and the advancing green host of Lord Ormund Hightower. When Ser Ulf White and Ser Hard Hugh Hammer turned their cloaks at the First Battle of Tumbleton in 130 AC and loosed their dragons, Silverwing and Vermithor, upon the town, his garrison of fewer than forty men yielded; the victorious greens bound and beheaded them. After the battle, Ser Jon Roxton claimed Lord Footly's wife, Lady Sharis, as a prize of war; when Lord Footly objected, Roxton cut him nigh in two with the Valyrian steel longsword Orphan-Maker. He left a son later proclaimed his posthumous trueborn heir, though the boy was widely believed to be Roxton's.
