House Fowler of Skyreach is one of the oldest and most powerful noble houses of Dorne, its roots sunk deep into the age before the Andals crossed the Narrow Sea. The Fowlers descend from the First Men kings who styled themselves Kings of Stone and Sky, ruling from their high seat at Skyreach, a castle carved from the rock at the Dornish end of the Prince's Pass. They guarded the Wide Way, as the pass was once known, the shortest and easiest route through the Red Mountains between Dorne and the Reach, and that wardenship gave them wealth and power enough to rival the Daynes and Yronwoods as the mightiest kings in Dorne. When Nymeria of the Rhoynar beached her ten thousand ships and wed Lord Mors Martell, the Fowlers faced a choice. King Garrison Fowler took the field against the Rhoynish alliance but was defeated and sent to the Wall in defeat. His successors, reading the winds rightly, cast their lot with the Martells and helped bring all Dorne under one rule.
That early allegiance shaped the house's character for a thousand years afterward. The Fowlers kept their seat and their hereditary title, Warden of the Prince's Pass, and nursed an ancestral feud with the Yronwoods who had stood on the other side of Nymeria's War. By the time of A Game of Thrones, Lord Franklyn Fowler, called the Old Hawk, holds Skyreach and commands the Dornish host assembled at the Prince's Pass. He is counted among the most powerful lords in Dorne, and his twin daughters Jeyne and Jennelyn, close companions of Nymeria Sand, are known throughout the Water Gardens and Sunspear alike.
