Unwin Peake was Lord of Starpike, Dunstonbury, and Whitegrove and head of House Peake during the Dance of the Dragons, in which he supported the greens. He marched a thousand men to join Lord Ormund Hightower's host, and after Hightower's death at the First Battle of Tumbleton he contended for command, stabbing Lord Owain Bourney through the eye at a war council as a turncloak. With Ser Hobert Hightower he gathered the conspirators known as the Caltrops, who plotted the deaths of the Two Betrayers; his tent was burned by the dragon Seasmoke during the Second Battle of Tumbleton, which he was one of four Caltrops to survive. During the regency of King Aegon III Targaryen he was passed over for the original council of regents, then took the seat left vacant by the death of Lord Corlys Velaryon. After the death of Ser Tyland Lannister he had himself named Hand of the King and Protector of the Realm in 133 AC, undoing the boy king's appointments and installing his own kin and a sellsword guard called the Fingers; by then he had taken possession of the Valyrian steel blade Orphan-Maker. He resigned the Handship when Aegon would not wed his daughter Myrielle, and was widely suspected, though never convicted, of masterminding the conspiracy against House Rogare during the Lysene Spring of 135 AC.
