Young John Mudd is a sellsword and serjeant of the Golden Company who claims, on doubtful authority, to be a knight. Brown-skinned and brown-clad, he wears golden coins in his ears, bears a scarred and weathered face, and is a brusque, brutal man, not well spoken, handy with sword, dagger, and dice. Though no longer a young man, he is called Young John to set him apart from his father, Old John Mudd, who also served the company. His surname is that of a house that once loomed large in the histories of the Seven Kingdoms, but he may or may not be a true Mudd, for the free companies let a man name himself as he pleases; he may be kin to another serjeant of the company, Lorimas Mudd. In A Dance with Dragons he swears the company's allegiance to Aegon Targaryen, and in the The Winds of Winter sample chapter he and a man called Chain hold Mistwood, keeping Lady Mary Mertyns under house arrest and hosting Arianne Martell's party for a night -- though Arianne judges there is nothing royal about him.
