Old John Mudd was a sellsword in service to the Golden Company and the father of Young John Mudd, who likewise took the company's coin. His surname belonged to a house that had once loomed large in the histories of the Seven Kingdoms, though whether he truly descended from the river kings is unknown, for in the free companies a man may call himself whatever he chooses. He has no chronicle of his own; he is recalled chiefly in his son's entry in the A Dance with Dragons appendix and in Arianne Martell's thoughts in the The Winds of Winter sample chapter, where she notes that Young John's father had also served in the Golden Company, where he was known as Old John Mudd.
