The Wyl of Wyl, whose given name is unknown, was Lord of Wyl and head of House Wyl during the First Dornish War. When Lord Orys Baratheon's forces tried to force the Boneway, the Wyl ambushed them in a night raid, raining down rocks, arrows, and spears, blocking the pass before and behind and taking Orys captive. He held Orys and his men for years, releasing them only in 7 AC when the Targaryens ransomed each man for his weight in gold, whereupon the Wyl struck off their sword hands so they could never again be raised against Dorne. He is remembered most for what Archmaester Gyldayn calls the most infamous act of the war: at the 12 AC wedding of Ser Jon Cafferen, heir to Fawnton, and Alys Oakheart, daughter of Lord Oakheart, the Wyl arrived uninvited, castrated the groom, gave Alys and her handmaids to his men and then to a Myrish slaver, and slew Lord Oakheart and most of the guests. Known thereafter as the Widow-lover, he died in 27 AC, leaving Wyl to his son Walter.
