Samwell Blackwood was Lord of Raventree Hall and head of House Blackwood at the dawn of the Dance of the Dragons. As a younger man he had lost a duel to his rival Ser Amos Bracken when Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen visited the Trident in 112 AC, the two contending in vain for her hand. When the war came in 129 AC he raised Queen Rhaenyra's banners over Raventree and loosed raiders into the Bracken lands, burning crops and sacking villages. When the Brackens marched to answer, Samwell ambushed them as they camped beneath a riverside mill, but in the Battle of the Burning Mill that followed he was cut down in single combat by Amos Bracken. The Blackwoods held that the weirwood arrow which struck Amos dead a heartbeat later was loosed by Samwell's young sister, Black Aly. He was succeeded as Lord of Raventree by his eleven-year-old son, Benjicot.
