Ser Quentyn Ball, called Fireball for his red hair and hotter temper, was a knight of House Ball who served as master-at-arms of the Red Keep in the days of King Aegon IV Targaryen, and in that office schooled the sons of Prince Daeron and the king's Great Bastards in arms alike. Promised a white cloak should a place fall vacant in the Kingsguard, he set aside his wife to the silent sisters to clear his path, only to see the honor given instead to Ser Willem Wylde; bitter at the slight, he threw in his lot with Daemon Blackfyre, and it was said he did as much as Bittersteel to set Daemon upon the path of rebellion. In the First Blackfyre Rebellion he rescued Daemon from the king's men, slew Lord Lefford before Lannisport, turned back Lord Damon Lannister to Casterly Rock, and cut down the sons of Lady Penrose at the Mander, sparing only her youngest as a kindness. He did not live to see the war decided, for he was felled by a common archer's arrow while pausing for a drink of water on the eve of the Battle of the Redgrass Field in 196 AC.
