Benfred Tallhart was the eldest son and heir of Ser Helman Tallhart, head of House Tallhart. A big, bluff, loud youth with a thick neck, he often rode to Winterfell with his father and was friendly with Robb Stark and Theon Greyjoy, who liked to bait him over that neck. In A Clash of Kings, exhilarated by Robb's victories in the War of the Five Kings, Benfred gathered a company of lances; when his uncle Leobald mocked them as "young rabbits," the men took the name the Wild Hares and tied rabbitskins to their lance-points. Sent to drive off the ironborn raiding the Stony Shore, Benfred rode without scouts and was surprised and routed by Theon Greyjoy. His Wild Hares were slain or scattered; the captured Benfred refused to answer Theon's questions, named him a traitor and spat on him, and was drowned at sea on Aeron Greyjoy's order in 299 AC.
