Longclaw is the ancestral bastard sword of House Mormont of Bear Island, a hand-and-a-half blade of Valyrian steel borne by the Mormonts for some five hundred years. When Ser Jorah Mormont disgraced the house by selling poachers into slavery and fled into exile, his father, Lord Commander Jeor Mormont, would not suffer the blade to follow a slaver across the narrow sea, and kept it at Castle Black.
Jeor gave Longclaw to Jon Snow as a reward for saving his life from a wight, and had the bear's-head pommel of white stone recast into the snarling head of a direwolf in honour of Jon's birth. Jon carries it still in the service of the Night's Watch.
