Dawn is the ancestral greatsword of House Dayne of Starfall, as old as the house itself and pale as milkglass. It is not Valyrian steel; the singers say it was forged from the heart of a fallen star, and no other blade like it is known in all the world. Yet for all its strange making it is said to hold an edge and a balance the equal of any Valyrian sword.
By ancient custom Dawn may be borne only by a knight of House Dayne deemed worthy of the title Sword of the Morning. The last to carry it was Ser Arthur Dayne, reckoned the finest knight of his age, who fell at the Tower of Joy to Eddard Stark and his companions at the end of Robert's Rebellion. Lord Eddard himself carried the sword home to Starfall and returned it to the Daynes.
Status: extant, kept at Starfall against the coming of the next Sword of the Morning.
