Lann the Clever Wins Casterly Rock

Legend · 9000 BC* · Casterly Rock

The Casterlys held the great stone fastness above the Sunset Sea in the dawn of days, yet it is not their name it bears in men's mouths but their fate: they were tricked out of it, root and branch, by the golden-haired rogue remembered as Lann the Clever. The tales cannot agree on the how of it. Some say he crept into the Rock through a secret way and whispered threats of haunting in the ears of sleeping Casterlys; others that he set mice loose in the larders, or stole in night after night until the family fled in terror of demons. However it was done, no blood was shed, and Lann's descendants have ruled the westerlands from Casterly Rock ever since as House Lannister, golden of hair and, their rivals would add, of tongue. The maesters allow that some seed of truth may hide in the japes, but a man who lived three hundred years and stole gold from the sun belongs to the singers.
