The Targaryens were far from the mightiest of the forty dragonlord families of Valyria, and it was counted no honour when Lord Aenar removed his house — wives, wealth, slaves, dragons and all — to a smoking island rock at the mouth of Blackwater Bay, the westernmost outpost of Valyrian power. He went because his maiden daughter Daenys, remembered ever after as Daenys the Dreamer, had foreseen in a dream the destruction of Valyria by fire. Twelve years later the Doom proved her true, and Aenar the Exile's descendants found themselves the last dragonlords in the world, keeping their strange westward vigil on Dragonstone with Balerion, the last dragon of Old Valyria, and the eggs that would hatch Vhagar and Meraxes. A century more would pass before Aegon looked west.
