Ser Vardis Egen was an anointed knight of House Egen who served Lord Jon Arryn as captain of his guards during Arryn's tenure as Hand of the King at King's Landing. A stocky, silver-haired man with a plain, square face, he struck Tyrion Lannister as humourless. After Jon Arryn's death in 298 AC, Vardis quit King's Landing in the company of Lady Lysa Arryn and her son Robert, returning to the Eyrie to serve as captain of the household guard; his own young son played with Robert until Lysa, judging the boys too rough, sent them away. When Tyrion Lannister, held captive at the Eyrie on Lysa's charge of murdering her husband, demanded a trial by combat, Lysa named Vardis her champion against Tyrion's sellsword Bronn. Weighed down by heavy plate, Vardis was worn down by the lightly armoured Bronn in the godswood; the sellsword toppled the weeping statue of Alyssa Arryn upon him and slew him where he lay.
