Tristifer IV Mudd, called the Hammer of Justice, was the fourth King of the Rivers and the Hills to bear that name and the last truly great king of the First Men in the riverlands. He raised the castle whose ruins are now called Oldstones, reckoned the strongest in Westeros at the time of its building, and ruled from the Trident to the Neck during the years the First Men were being overrun in the Andal invasion. When Roland II Arryn, King of Mountain and Vale, invaded the riverlands, Tristifer smashed his host and drove the Valemen into retreat; betrayed by one of his own allies, Roland was delivered to the river king and beheaded at Oldstones. The Tullys fought at Tristifer's side through many of his campaigns. He is said to have fought one hundred battles and won ninety-nine, losing only his last, when seven Andal kings -- the greatest of them Armistead Vance -- fell upon him at once and slew him. Known from his tomb to have worn a beard and borne a warhammer, he was buried at Oldstones and succeeded by his son, Tristifer V. His deeds are recorded in The World of Ice & Fire and recalled by Catelyn Stark in A Storm of Swords.
