Owen Merryweather was Lord of Longtable during the reign of Aerys II Targaryen, a man considered amiable but ineffectual, famous for lavishing praise upon the king and chuckling at all his jests. When Lord Tywin Lannister resigned the Handship in 281 AC, the aged Owen was named Hand in his place — Ser Jaime Lannister styled him "the horn-of-plenty Hand" for the cornucopia on his arms. With Tywin gone, Owen and Grand Maester Pycelle laboured to keep the peace between the partisans of Aerys and those of Prince Rhaegar, but Owen proved unable to forestall Robert's Rebellion; he sent missives across the realm declaring Jon Arryn, Robert Baratheon, and Eddard Stark outlaws, yet never stirred from King's Landing. Suspecting him of conspiracy, the paranoid Aerys stripped the Merryweathers of their lands and titles and exiled Owen in 282 AC, replacing him with Jon Connington. King Robert I Baratheon later restored the titles and some lands to Owen's grandson, Orton.
