Ser Oswell Whent was a knight of House Whent, born at Harrenhal, and a member of King Aerys II Targaryen's Kingsguard—the younger brother of Lord Walter Whent of Harrenhal. He wore a distinctive helm emblazoned with the black bat of his house and was remembered for his dark humor. It was shortly after a visit from Oswell that his brother announced the great tourney at Harrenhal in 281 AC, where Oswell and his nephews swore in vain to defend the crown of the fair maid; he was present too when Ser Jaime Lannister took the white cloak. By a semi-canon account, Oswell aided Prince Rhaegar Targaryen in carrying off Lyanna Stark near Harrenhal as the false spring ended. He fell in 283 AC at the tower of joy in Dorne, slain alongside Ser Arthur Dayne and Ser Gerold Hightower by Lord Eddard Stark and his companions; stones from the tower were used to raise his cairn.
