Leo Tyrell, remembered ever after as Leo Longthorn and called by some the rose lord, was Lord of Highgarden and head of House Tyrell in the reign of King Daeron II Targaryen, and is reckoned among the greatest knights his house ever bred—indeed many name him the finest jouster ever to couch a lance. In the First Blackfyre Rebellion he held the Reach loyal to House Targaryen and won notable victories against the supporters of Daemon I Blackfyre, though his levies gathered too slowly to reach the Redgrass Field in 196 AC. At the great tourney at Ashford Meadow in 209 AC he rode as a champion, silver in his hair and a grey beard upon his chin, unhorsing Lord Damon Lannister, Lord Pearse Caron, and the one-eyed Ser Robyn Rhysling, and as liege-lord of the host he judged the cause of Ser Duncan the Tall and allowed Prince Aerion his trial of seven. By the wedding tourney at Whitewalls in 212 AC he was said to be ailing, and Ser Duncan and his squire drank to his health; long after, Lord Mace Tyrell would dream of siring another Leo Longthorn in his own sons.
