Ser Cedric Payne was a knight of a lesser branch of House Payne and one of the richer cousins whom Podrick's father had squired for. He took in the orphaned Podrick Payne after the boy's father died in Greyjoy's Rebellion and his mother abandoned him, though he is said to have treated the boy more as a servant than a relative. When Lord Tywin Lannister called his banners, Cedric brought Podrick along to tend his horse and clean his mail. He died in the fighting in the riverlands during the War of the Five Kings, leaving Podrick alone in the host.
